we are just getting back into the studio after a long "winter's" nap. if only it felt like winter out there! we have fully recovered from our most successful holiday season in nine years and are fully recharged, rejuvenated and ready to rock in two thousand and twelve. we can't wait to share with you what we have in store! cheers everyone and thanks for all of your support in twenty eleven.

The holidays are a little nutty around here to say the least. Designing starts in June or July. Shows kick into full swing in the early fall. By Thanksgiving we are up to our elbows in Christmas card orders and only two weeks to fill them all. The Bowman house is always the last one on the street to put up the lights and the men at the tree stand normally toss the pathetic, needless specimen on our car on the 20th with a HUGE discount. Our gifts are always late and our cards are never sent. And on Christmas day we check out with Santa, hot chocolate or toddy in hand.

After 10 years, I am extremely excited to say that we finally have it down to a mastered science. Not only was it in the biggest and best Christmas card season at inkSpotts, we wrapped up all of our customers' holiday greetings and even had time to stop and enjoy a few quiet moments ourselves. We are still in disbelief at how seamless the season was, considering in the midst of it all we did a kitchen renovation. Why not do everything at once, right?

Because our house is new to the decorating, baking and merriment scene, we thought we would open our home to you the days leading up to Christmas and spread the new found joy.

We have been celebrating the 12 days of inkSpotts Christmas Cards on our facebook page. Today, our card of choice is not one that we created but one that was given as a gift a few years ago. It was found in a little gift shop here in Atlanta but, I truly think that it could have been pulled out of my Grandmother's trunk of heirlooms. I treasure it every year when I pull it out of the bin of decorations. The design and artwork are classic. The penmanship is beautiful! And, the message just makes me chuckle - "have not heard from you in a coons age". Again, are you sure that this was not my Grandmother's?

It's Show Time!

Tonight is the BIG night! The popcorn is ready to be popped and the hot cocoa is waiting to be stirred. Friends and family bursting with anticipation, ready to cuddle up and tune in to CBS 8:30pm est - The Elf on the Shelf: AN ELF'S STORY!!! It's being called the next Holiday Movie Classic, but why are we so excited about it? Well, it could just be because I was lucky enough to spend a small amount of time in the production studio. I had the pleasure of drawing the concept designs for the characters costumes. It was absolutely amazing watching the behind scene process of how such a movie comes to life. See some of it for yourself here. Thank you Chad and Tara from Trick 3D and Big Canoe Entertainment for an experience I will never forget!

The magic doesn't just stop there, last Sunday I had the opportunity of a life time to join the cast and a crew at the red carpet, black tie movie premiere event. Not only was it exciting to be apart of the show, it was an experience that words can describe watching my 1 1/2 year old daughter Eliza capture the magic of Christmas, understanding who Santa and of course his elves really were for the first time. Seeing my name on the big screen was just the icing on the Christmas cookie.

I can't wait to wake up tomorrow to see where the Elf that has been sent to the Bowman house will be "hiding"? hmmmm... and what shall we name him?

I hope that you all enjoy the movie as much as I have enjoyed the experience. May it become a tradition in your home as well. Don't forget to adopt your elf if you haven't already!

Remember this inspiration board that we put together back in August for an invitation project that we were starting to work on?

Well, we have just put the finishing touches on it and it is ready for the printer. We had a blast working with the happy couple. What were our guidelines? We needed to incorporate rugby, a VW camper van and it was too be fun and casual.

Now, all we need to do is save all of our pennies for those April plane tickets to England. Congratulations Jools and Laura.

Finally - Fall! There is nothing better than the crisp mornings, evenings cuddled up by an outdoor fire and in between, everything pumpkin! brandywine river museum

the rolling fields of kings ranch, chester county pa.

okay, so this week we are cheating - we couldn't narrow it down to just one photo. the entire week was about inspiration (and a lot of late nights of too many ideas, not enough time)

you never know what is going to happen when you take the long way home. first stop, the brandywine river museum, an 18th century grist mill that houses the collection of works of the three generation of wyeths. (three of my favorite all time artists) next stop, the rolling fields of king's ranch, historic horse country dating back to william penn. the area is still known for fox hunts and steeple chases and little did i know at the time, this little jewel, doe run farm. this farm to table estate is owned by the man behind anthroplogie, urban outfitters and terrain. what rock have i been living under? i had no idea that they were all based in the city of brotherly love. i can't wait to visit terrain at styers soon. i can't imagine what will come from that trip, seeing what has been sparked just by visiting the website. TGIF...time to give the creative juices a rest and enjoy and relaxing weekend!! we hope that you all enjoy it!!

As we prepare to pack up the family truckster next week to head north in hopes of cooler weather and lots of family time, we thought it would be a good idea to see what is left to cross off the "summer-eleven to do list". good thing our summer has 6 weeks left!

as a designer, one of the hardest things is to design for yourself. yup, i am the stationer that never sends out holiday cards, barely sent out birth announcement for her first born and you better believe that i never have a business card on me. it was time to take care of the latter. i sent them off to the printer yesterday and am anxiously awaiting them to show up in the mailbox.

i only ordered 100 because, i am sure that as the wind changes, i will change my mind about the style of them. ha!

As I sat on my sofa, drinking my Sunday morning coffee, I looked out the window and saw my neighbor put something in his mailbox. As he put the flag up, I commented to my husband, "what do you think he put in there?" His reply, "Why do you care?" It wasn't that I cared, but it really made me think. It's not like any of us, on a regular basis drop a note in the mail to a friend. How many of us actually mail out a birthday card? Perhaps it was a bill being paid, put rarely do we put a stamp on that anymore. It made me sad. I remember as a child, running down our long lane to the mailbox every day, in hopes to find a letter from my Aunt in Boston or my pen pal in Australia. Even today, I get overly excited when I see an envelope sticking out of the pile of junk that has the hope of being something personally written. I am not saying that I am any better at that anyone else. Actually, I think I am worse. You know the saying, the cobbler's kids don't have shoes. Well the stationer never sends a card. It's all I can do to get our holiday greetings out every year. So, now that we are half we through the year, I propose that you join me a "new years resolution" Once a month, drop something in the mail to a friend. Say hello. Invite them to dinner. Wish them happy birthday. Welcome a neighbor home from vacation. Send a note to camp. Say thank you. To help with this June resolution, all of our note cards with be 20% off for the rest of the month. Just for the occasion, we will be adding our "fresh picked" note package that will include a variety notes for various occasions.

i stumbled across this site last night and it was LOVE at first click! design-seeds was exactly what i needed to boost myself out of my design slump. with four major deadlines looming in the not so distant future, none of my normal tricks were working. i would gaze at the computer blankly for hours on end. i am going to ahead and blame on this crazy atlanta heat wave. i am however a northern girl at heart and even after the being in the she south for 12 years, i still can't adjust to the summers - i turn to mush! finally, in my haze, i discovered something that made me snap out of it. design-seeds.com is clean, fresh, organic, and full of color. just the motivation i needed to get the creative juices flowing. let's hope it is enough to get me through the weekend and so i can cross some items off the to-do list! with the fan blowing on my desk and a large glass of my grandma's meadow tea in hand, i am back to the sketch pad!

Last week, I shared the A Fresh Bunch Blog about where as an artist our ideas come from. As Lori says in her blog, ideas can hit you when you are least expecting it. Now that the inkSpotts 2011 Designs are ready to hit the market, I thought that I would share my design board. It's a collaboration of things that have inspired me to hit

the drawing board.

Ideas come from: a trip to the farm, a visit from nature, an afternoon shopping with the girls at Atlanta's White Provisions District, a Friday morning in Lancaster's Central Market, a bountiful garden, an old apron in Grandma's kitchen, www.pinterest sets my head spinning or an inspiring chat from a creative friend. Some of my best thoughts come while on a long run or in the shower (the only peace a mother of a 16 month gets ;D

Just when outside April showers are bringing May flowers, the inkSpotts studio was a Christmas wonderland. I am still pinching myself in disbelief, that inkSpotts was chosen to be a part of A Fresh Bunch Licensing Group. It is the opportunity that I have been working towards for the past 10 years! Pinch me harder, the first project was designing Holiday cards for a major retailer. Nothing like jumping right in. Here are a few of the samples that inkSpotts submitted. Now it is up for the client to decide. Just like the Jack Johnson song, "I am sitting, waiting, wishing.." I'll be sure to keep you posted!

But like I said, the experience working with some of the "greats" has been well worth it all! And now, I am going to enjoy a little break and go for a very long walk!

The Spotted Dog

Many of you inquired about our "Everything London" when you saw no further updates. No, you didn't miss any posts or new additions. Our "Everything London" week at inkSpotts got put on hold when we suddenly had to say goodbye to our studio dog, Berg. The loss of our dear friend not only made it difficult to function around the studio but any thought of creativity was stripped. We are slowly putting ourselves back together and thought that we would dedicate this blog to our sweet girl.

If you ever stopped by for a consult or a pick up and order, she was at the door to greet you with a wag and a lick. Just today, one of our clients commented how sad and quiet it was with out our spotted furry friend under foot.

You may recognize her from a few of our designs or logos from years gone by. Our tailgating designs is one of our very first sketches and over our 8 years has been an on going favorite. It hard to imagine life around here without her.

I am sure that my recent addiction to the BBC show "Gavin and Stacey" doesn't help, neither does all of the press on the upcoming royal wedding. For all of these reasons, London's calling. One of the advantages of living in a hundred year old village is all of the stories and lore that comes with it. inkSpotts is nestled in a little cotton mill village just minutes from the bustle of down town Atlanta. City life is a stone's throw away yet, sit a spell on one of our front porches and the peaceful will put you a million miles away.

I was told this weekend of a Valentines tradition that used to take place amongst the villagers. I thought that it was too sweet to not share. On

Valentine's night they would "throw" Valentine cards to each other. They would place the cards on the porch and threw a rock. The sound of the rock hitting the wooden porch would signal a card was left. I LOVE it!!!! A tradition that certainly needs to return to Whitti

This custom project was a great break from our Holiday card design and proofing. However, hand drawing the feathers deemed more of a challenge than I initially thought. The midnight oil was burned on this one but in the end I realized that challenge is a good thing. We hope that the bride-to-be is just as excited. Best wishes, Kathleen!

Ask anyone who knows me well, I am extremely modest about my work. Even though I have been doing this for 8 years, I still have to remind myself that I am artist/graphic artist. When I go to my mailbox, leaf through the magazine that has arrived and realize that my work has been featured, it then makes it seem real. I take my work so personally that even the slightest bit of acknowledgment or compliment makes me soar.

This is exactly what happened on Saturday when I found the latest edition of "Stationery Trend Magazine" I was enthralled by all of the amazing work when BAM! there was my rock-n-roll invitation before me on the page. All bright colored and happy, it was photographed as part of their digital photo card feature!

The funny part of this, is that inkSpotts' preppy birth announcement was listed last year in same issue. On that particular announcement I used a photo of my little friend Bryce.

This time, same cute little face, only now it was his first birthday party invitation.

One more slight detail. The article came out on his 2nd birthday weekend. I would say that this guy is my little good luck charm. I hope that there is a good holiday photo coming, maybe we can go for three years running? :O)

We love to see our invitations come to life.This bride was the most laid back bride that we have ever worked with. I think that that vibe carried through to her big day! It all started with a beach chair. We helped her take that theme from her invitations and post card responses, to her rehearsal dinner invites, wedding favors and thank you notes. The studio was all a bustle last week when we were invaded by The Other Megan Photography and Curtis Baker. Thanks to Curtis and Megan, we have some great new product shots for our new website, portfolio and this and that. It was great fun to collaborate with both of them. I'm not sure that any of us have fully recovered from the day, it was most definitely a perfect storm of creative forces.

Happy Friday!!! Today, I would like to highlight a few of our favorite things that have brightened our days for the first four months of parenthood.
Perched high on the book shelves, this little bird adds the perfect touch of pink and whimsy to the nursery. Our felted feathered friend is handmade by friend Jenni Horne. I am addicted to all of Jenni's work. I was so excited to find this little gal, the colors match the room perfectly! It is never to early to teach a little girl the importance of a good shoe. I couldn't wait for the day for the "blue bird" shoes to fit. {Let's start at the very begining...}

...It's a very good place to start.

The first 5 months of our pregnancy was full of fear and anxiety over the labor and delivery process. Then, at a field hockey tournament, I learned that my teammate Jenn Purdy was one of the founders of Lumina Birth. After Jenn became our doula and we took her birth class, we became more informed about the advantages of a natural child birth and she empowered us to believe it was something we could achieve. When we went into labor Jenn came to our home and immediately provided us the support we needed to do much of the labor at home. Once at the hospital, she created a calming atmosphere and supported us through the final stage of labor. Having her in the room was extremely helpful when it came to coordinating care with the hospital staff and making sure we were both comfortable and at ease as to what was happening. After only about 2 hours in the hospital we welcomed our beautiful healthy baby Eliza Mae to the world, naturally. We can look back on the entire labor process as a peaceful and beautiful event in our lives and we owe a lot of that to Jenn. We may even do it again! :O)

Yes, I was that kid that was always being told "the walls are not for coloring on". I am going to have a hard time explaining that one to my daughter, I am sure.

I have turned something that was once considered being mischievous, into yet another aspect of the inkSpotts business. It is fun and invigorating to switch to such a large canvas. Whether it is a four legged best friend or something to match a nursery theme it is always exciting to see where the inspiration may lead.

eliza loves looking at the extra large painting of her best friend berg that is painted over the mantel in her nursery. and the three little birds, remind us that everything little thing is going to be alright.

It has been over four months since our last blog, but my how time has flown by. I would like to say, Happy New Year, Happy Spring, and welcome to the world, baby Eliza!

I am officially announcing that I am back from maternity leave, although I am not sure that I technically ever stopped designing, cutting and printing. In denial that she would actually be coming early, I spent half of my labor designing a 5 year old birthday invite (I will be sure to share that with you later). I have taken a few jobs here and there but am finally ready to get back into the swing of things. inkSpotts is open for business!

This week, I would like to dedicate my blog to life as a Mom! I promise, it won't always be this way. I just thought it would be the perfect way get my feet wet again.

There are many new things coming to inkSpotts in the very near future. New products. New designs. New website and much, much more, so stay tuned!

I LOVE Thanksgiving!!! It is my most favorite day of the year! Food, family, friends, and don't forget Tom Turkey as he strolls down the streets of New York in the Macy's Parade! As a kid, thanksgiving meant gathering with close to 100 relatives and eating the most delicious dishes. We would run and play with our cousins that we would have not seen since the previous year. The Summer's family will gather on Thursday, oh what I wouldn't do to be there. It has been far too long! In recent years, the tradition has been to run the 13.1 miles down Peachtree Street in Atlanta, then tailgate with the best of friends. This year, being 8 months pregnant, a 1/2 marathon is a little out of the question. Instead, we will gather around the turkey and be thankful for the miracle of our upcoming arrival! Laura and Luca came to us to help them with their bilingual wedding package. The magnolia that is used throughout, is a symbol of Atlanta, where the couple met. Since the wedding was small affair in the family chapel in Italy, it was very important to have an old world feel, yet the bride and groom both have extremely modern taste. We think that we captured this from the wedding invitation to their New Years cards.

it started with a small canvas painting and it grew, and grew, and grew until our inkSpotts designs covered every nook and cranny of this now one-of-a-kind nursery. it was a fun and challenging project working on a MUCH larger medium that what we are used to. the room went from a plain khaki square to an enchanted place where it looks like a story book has come to life. a perfect place for the two year old's imagination to run wild.

it has been forever since our last post. the lazy days of summer have gotten the best of us around the studios these days. time flies when you are having fun picking raspberries in the back yard, helping the neighbor kids go sans training wheels, ice cream cone breaks on the porch swing, quick dips in the pool here and there, baseball games and summer evenings watching the lightning bugs. all of this and it's not even the 4th of july! however, it is not all play and no work. this new guy sprang from all of the sights, sounds and smells of our long summer days. our "patchwork posy" will be added to our products at inkSpotts as well as our etsy store soon! we hope that you are taking time enjoy the simple pleasures of these months. we promise, we will be back with another blog soon!!

As many of you head out for the Holiday weekend, it's all about a good road trip. It's the good tunes on the radio. The car packed to the gills with all of the necessities and then some. The snap shots of the memories caught along the way.

This week, President Obama declared the Chesapeake Bay a National Treasure. I couldn't agree more! Growing up in the Chesapeake watershed, I have always known that this is an extremely special place. From crayfishing in it's streams, to boating in it's waters, and to camping and hiking along it's shores, the area is a very special place that has given me countless memories. That is why, we are teaming up with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in hopes to help Save the Bay. "three little birds"

maybe they were in inspired by the bob marley tune that was playing or the "sweeps" that keep eying up our chimney to build their nest for the second year in a row. however they came to be, these birds have much deeper history than just that -

our studio is tucked away in a little historic neighborhood in the northwest corner of atlanta. whittier mills village was a thriving cotton mill village from the 1920's until 1971. this week, my neighbor shared a treasure with me. she had been loaned, a book of of city maps from 1920. we couldn't stop studying the pages of our little secret corner of the city. i couldn't just let the pages lie there...from copies of that book, these happy little birds came to life. i can't wait to share this with everyone in the hood.

The other day I was reading one of the blogs that I check out on a regular basis, sfgirlbybay. She was writing about her upcoming trip to London. Her pictures made me reminiscent of my recent trip across the pond. I sat down with a cup of tea and started flipping through my photos and memorabilia. One thing lead to another and, voila.

"London Calling" print is available in an 8x10 or 11x14.

It is now available on our website and at our etsy shop.
Here are a few of my favorite places in London or things that sparked inspiration.

One of the few nights that we were not lucky enough to stay with good friends, we stayed at the
Sherlock Holmes Hotel in the Marylebone District. They had great lounge with large leather chairs and a fireplace. Perfect for playing Apples to Apples with friends.

Just around the corner from our hotel, La Fromagerie. Cheeses from across Europe, dry goods and the yummiest treats! Eat and Two Veg. As a vegetarian, this quickly became my favorite place in town. Proper English Breakfast, Butternut Crumble and Curry, and all of the other local dishes, only all veggie, soy and vegan! If only we I could have packed these in my bag!!When designing fabric, I am always working with the printer with the Pantone colors. I love to flip through the paper swatch book in my studio and if you could see my kitchen walls, there is about 5 different colors of paint on each. I can't decide what color I want to paint them. Color is a huge part of my life. Add the fact the I am a coffee addict, I just can't get enough of these. I spotted these mugs in a small shop but they are also available online at www.grahamand green.co.uk

Now, it is back to reality. My tea cup is empty and all that is left is the memories and wishing I was there.

you could say that it is a bit of an addiction. it all started two years ago when the best husband in the world gave me a pair of nike sneakers and the ipod/nike+ for christmas. it came just after i had recovered from being in a cast for 9 months and being advised to never run again. yes, i am an addict that does not listen to the doctors. needless to say, i started to run and never stopped. i just passed the 1,000 mile and have no intentions of stopping. running fuels my creativity, inspiration, and friendships. the above is an ode to the past 2 years. a good friend gave me the charm pictured above to commemorate the occasion. i LOVE it. check it out at silvercanyons.etsy.com. thanks to all who have been their along the journey. here's to many more!!!

{earth day everyday}

living along the banks of the chattahoochee river has it perks. every morning, my dog berg and i walk along it's shores. frequently, we spot turtles, owls, hawks, cranes and numerous tracks of other critters. it is a simple and serene way to start the day. while many people are sitting on the near by interstates, inching their way to work, while meandering through the forest, i have already made my mental notes of what has to be done that day, gathered a few ideas of things that i need to sketch or conducted my first conference call. during earth week as every week, i strive to give back to this little oasis. small things done on a daily basis can make a big difference. i hope that all of you can take the time to to enjoy a little piece of nature this week and take some time to think about what you can do too.

Here is a little sneak peak before it hits the press. (Dave, i hope that's okay). This is the illustration that I did for the upcoming issue of Caribbean Bride Magazine. It seems to be all tropical weddings around the studios these days. I guess it could be worse!

The best part, I am extremely excited to officially be apart of the CB Team. I look forward to illustrating an article for each issue and stock items that will be featured through out the magazine! Isn't there important meetings that I need to attend in Barbados? Dave Cox, the publisher, and I have played Field Hockey together for years. From the pitch to his photography and the magazine, it is easy to see, whatever he does, he does it extremely well. It is truly an honor to now be apart of this team.

hawaiian themed + bright tropical colors + fun and festive = no problem! oh and we need them ASAP. and, we are trying to stick to a budget. again, no problem! the results, an invitation that made the bride-to-be cry.

Happy Easter from InkSpotts

InkSpotts took its first crack at face painting for the Eggstravaganza Easter Egg Hunt in Whittier Mill Park. There was a huge turn out for the event, which also featured Pony Rides, the Easter Bunny, Buzz from Georgia Tech and real live bunnies.....ohh and a huge easter egg hunt.

I painted everything from bunny whiskers and easter eggs to fish and footballs. There was a huge turn out for this event and by the end of the day I was beat. All the kids were great and I had a great time, but I have to say I prefer to keep my artistic works on the much more still and quiet form of paper.

SEVEN years! it is hard to believe! inkSpotts was born in 2001 when, out of the blue, an opportunity emerged to take over a small stationery business and I, took the plunge. From college graduate in environmental education to CEO (not to mention designer, accountant, marketing director and shipping coordinator!) Not long after that, our whimsical designs could be spotted in Swoozie's, Paper Affair and Limetree . It was hard for me to believe that not only was inkSpotts being sold around the world via our on-line store but, in retail stores across the country.
We are celebrating our birthday in a big way! We are proud to announce the grand opening of our etsy store! check it out now! And, follow us on twitter . look at us being so techno savvy!

Never in my life would I have thought that this is what I would be doing when I grew up... Somedays, I have to pinch myself to remind myself that I am grown up. It is great to look back over the past seven years and see how we have grown. I can't wait to see what the next seven bring.. and the seven after that, and the seven after that, and........

a few months back, a friend told me that i should illustrate a book or create artwork for kids. jill, it has taken months of procrastination, lots of rainy days, and plenty of silent moments sitting in front of a blank computer screen, but ... TA-DA ... the moment has arrived.. the unveiling of my first piece. "animal abc's" will be made as poster size prints. it will be available soon at www.theinkspott.com and will be debuting at the serenbe mayday festival. i can't wait to share the others that i have up my sleeve - the tour of london game board, monsters, and a day in paris. be sure to check back soon! thanks, jill! see what you have started (hehe). now, do you know the name of a good publisher?

returning home

Today's blog is more of a personal one. Just last week, I returned home to Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania for my Grandfather's funeral. It was a time of peace and reflection. Not only was I inspired of the simple life that he lead for 93 years, I was reminded of the how life can be quiet and natural, down on the farm. It took me back to my childhood. I started to sketch and after reviewing the sketches, they reminded me of an artist that I stumbled upon in Scotland a few months back. She drew animals that surrounded her and used watercolor to bring them to life.

"clara" and "lizzie" are the beginnings of my newest collection. It's a bit of a change from my more modern pieces that I have done recently . As inkSpotts turns 7 years old this month, I thought that it would be a good time to return to my roots, in more ways than one.

These new designs will be printed on 6x6 100% recycled luxe cream card stock with a cordinating enevelope. They will be avaible on our website, at the Serenbe MayDay Festival , and our upcoming etsy shop. Check back soon for more critters!

just to show you that we can think outside the whimsical box, here is an ad that we created this weekend to be published for the blue ridge adventure race. we have worked with river dwelling over the past few years in designing their logo, branding, tag line, and different advertisements for several publications. we also provide them with all of their printed material such as business cards, pamphlets, information sheets and holiday cards for their guests. we can't complain about the benefits..a few days at this awesome vacation home in the north georgia mountains. it's the perfect get away. check it out for yourself!!

who's ready for spring?....i am! that's why, not only was it fun working with a good friend but, it was a breath of fresh air just thinking of all of the laughter and anticipation of baby Ragsdale that would float over the bursting blooms on the day of the party. we kept things simple, sweet and used natural colors that the mommy- to- be is going to use throughout the nursery. please feel free to contact us if you are interested in a custom design invitation for your next event.
